THE ISLANDER PAPER - 1909

THE  ISLANDER  PAPER  -  1909

Bar Harbor Record
March 17, 1909

"The Islander" the High School paper, made its initial appearance last Friday.  It contains an abundance of good reading, both witty and thoughtful.  Two very interesting stories are in it also;  one a baseball story, and the other the Legend of the Three Porcupines."  This latter was written by Rita Higgins '09, and to a great many Bar Harbor people, is new.  It is the old Indian legend of the three Porcupine Islands in the harbor.  The Islander makes known the different phases of the life the scholars are enjoying at their fine new building.  It shows that High School is something more than a few desks, books, and a crop of teachers.

The paper is well written, having some fine editorials, news of the alumni, and school locals.  In the school local columns are most aptly written jokes, and shows what a good time they have made from hard study and dreadful "exams."  The Islander is a name that is distinctive, for few High Schools can boost of being on an island.  It will be published once a term.  The copies of the first issue are nearly all gone, showing with what enthusiasm it was received by the students and the townspeople.  It is the first paper ever published by the High School, and was not started without some misgivings on the part of the students.  They are to be heartily congratulated on their success, and the next number will be anxiously awaited by everybody.  The school can now close with every other High School of the highest rank in the state, having a first class building, first class teachers, first class athletics, and first class showing of school spirit, and school loyalty is what determines a school's success.  The editorial staff is as follows - Editor in Chief, Esther Higgins, '09, business manger, T. Carol Higgins, '09, Literary board, Amanda Rochardson, '09, William Cleaves, '09, Helen Willey, '10, Albion (unreadable), '10, Byron Brewer, '10, Hazel Allen, '11, business board, Slyvia Austin, '09, Annie Horan, '09, Dorothy Sherman, '10, Chauncey Pierce, '10, Walker Herilhy, '10, Lena Jordan, '12.
