Bar Harbor Record
August 1, 1894
A cottage has been completed on Cliftstone road and Eden Street for Mrs. Sarak K. Henning, of Louisville, KY. from plans by Sidney V. Stratton and Frank H. Quimby, architects, of New York.
The building is two stories and attic and the entire length is about 120 feet and 40 feet wide. The entire exterior is covered with cedar shingles which will be altered to take a natural weather stain. The chimneys are of red brick decorated with an English deeper pattern and surrounded with chimney pots.
There is an abundance of large balconies and also a covered pavilion 28 feet square over looking Eden Street and having an extensive view of the town and Frenchman's Bay.
HENNING COTTAGE - BAR HARBOR MAINE |
The house is entered from Cliftstone road through a small vestibule into a hall 28 feet square treated in the Colonial style with ceiling beams supported on Turcan Doric columns and a large fireplace with a Colonial mantle piece. The wood work is all ivory white and the electric fixtures are old brass. At one corner is a circular bay window and on the opposite side the door leading to a small smoking room under the stair landing. Adjoining the hall on the right are the dinning room and parlor. The dinning room is furnished in mahogany and has the hardware and electric fixtures finished in steel. The decorations and furnishings of the parlor will be Empire.
The service portion of the house is all accommodated in the wing projecting at an angle from one corner of the house towards Cliftstone Road, at the end of which a porch has been provided for the servants.
On the stair leading to an alcove flanked by Tuscan pilasters and containing a window seat, for which a few steps lead us to a second floor which is occupied by the six bedrooms and bathroom. This floor is all flushed in white and four of the rooms have open fireplaces.
The third story is occupied by guests rooms and an additional bathroom, both bath rooms being fitted up with open plumbing with floors and wall tiled. The plumbing was put in by Mr. H.M. Norton.
The entire house is to be lighted by electricity, the wiring for which was done by the Bar Harbor Illuminating Company.
The contractor for the work was the firm of Asa Hodgkins & sons.
Every room in this house except one gets direct sun at some time during the day.
