HOW EDEN BECAME BAR HARBOR

After some digging, I finally found an old newspaper article which explains the main reason why the name of Eden was changed to Bar harbor, and it was done for a reason I would never have suspected.  Can you believe the name change all came down to an issue of mail delivery being delayed?  There was a long drawn out debate among town people, many wanted the town to keep the name Eden, but according to an article in the Bar Harbor Times dated March 9, 1918, the town voted to change its name to Bar harbor because the towns mail kept getting delivered to the small village near the head of the island, also named Eden, and the mail would have to be redelivered to the town of Eden, resulting in a delay of mail on a regular basis.
The article states the town meeting took two days, though it was pointed out that other past town meetings took up to three days to complete.
So it was a problem with mail delivery from two places on the island having the same name that caused Eden to become Bar harbor, who would have ever thought.
