SUBMARINE VISITED BAR HARBOR THURSDAY NIGHT

The people of Bar Harbor were greatly surprised on Thursday at the appearance in the harbor of a submarine.  The excitement was not as great as it would of been last year at this time, but the wharf of the Eastern Steamship Company was thronged throughout the evening.  The boat crept into the harbor late in the afternoon Thursday and tied up at the wharf for the night.  It was the N-1 which was at the end of a trip up the coast from New London.  Friday morning the boat left on the return trip.  The N-1 stopped at some port every night, visiting Portland and Bath on her trip up the Maine coast.  On the return it was planned to run direct to New London.

The N-1 is one of the older type submarines and is 147 feet long.  She carries a crew of twenty-five.  On the last leg of the trip she was convoyed by the S.P. 687.
As this is the first submarine to enter the harbor and naturally was an object of great curiosity to the residents of the town.  Through there were but few people on the dock to meet her when she arrived, the word spread rapidly and the dock was crowded until late in the evening.  In the morning also there was a curious crowd to see the boat off on its journey back to New London.
