THE GREEN MOUNTAIN SPRING

THE GREEN MOUNTAIN SPRING

Mount Desert Herald
June 28, 1883

At the summit of Green Mountain is a well of pure water twelve feet deep, and near it is a sparkling spring.  These were never known to fail.  The overflow of the spring forms quite a stream which the railway crosses 1100 feet from the top of the mountain, and again 350 feet from the lake.  Just above the depot the spring leaps over a flat ledge, giving eight and a half feet head above the water tank in the station.

The piece above talks about the spring on the summit of Green Mountain, later renamed Cadillac Mountain, and makes mention of the stream which spills from the spring, a stream I have over the years refereed to as the Green Mountain Stream.  I have never seen the spring nor the well at the summit, but will make it a point to look for it on my next  trip up there, one could hide a well, but not a spring with that much water flowing from it.  I have not retraced that final stretch of ground where the train passed near the very summit, the brush in that section is very thick, nor was I aware that the train tracks crossed the brook higher up near the summit, something to look into at some point.
Further down on the lower end of the Green Mountain Stream the piece above talks of the water leaping over a tall ledge, and when not in a dry spell, the waters there form a small waterfall.

At the upper right corner of this ledge is about where the train tracks passed as they crossed the brook at an angle in front of this ledge.

This photo was taken just below the ledge,

This photo was taken just below the ledge, facing the wooden bridge and Eagle Lake Carriage Road.  At this point, the tracks would of already crossed the brook, moving from the left to the right side of the brook as they made their ways to the edge of the lake.

The Green Mountain Stream is an interesting stream with a number of cascades and small water falls along its route and if you have read my blog on the Hidden Waterfall of Cadillac Mountain, that waterfall is located along this very stream.

ACADIA NATIONAL PARK
This is an amazing waterfall, a short walk from the Park Loop Road and easy to locate as long as your following the left hand side of the stream.  You have the falls with cascades of water to either side of it and if you go there following a good rain  the view is just amazing.
