OLD BURYING GROUNDS OF EDEN MAINE

EDEN, MAINE
BURYING GROUNDS AND CEMETERIES

The following Cemetery burying ground notes were taken from two books of hand written notes of Eben M. Hamor of West Eden, who died Nov. 1910 at age 88 years, 7 months and 10 days.  Eben spent the last few years of his life collecting and copying old town records of the Island of Mount desert and in compiling all the important events and interesting incidents in the history of the town of Eden and the island in general.  Selected notes from his two hand written books were published in the Bar Harbor Times over a period of two years,  and included the following Cemetery descriptions and notes.

The early settlers of Eden buried their dead on their own land in fields or in small neighborhood burying grounds.  Some of these places have been cared for and are now in fair condition, others have had no care, trees have grown over the graves, head stones have fallen down, and in many instantes it is impossible to tell where the graves are or who were buried there.
In other places the cemeteries have been fenced and the grounds well cared for and kept in good condition. Next sentence unreadable.  I will designate these places by numbers as I visited them and give the date of any visit.

I have this day visited an old burying ground in the Thomas District part of which is the westerly end of a field now owned by Edwin Cousins, formerly by Jacob S. Thomas, also part of which is located in the eastern part of what is known as the Comfort Thomas pasture - now How and Pendieton.
There are quite a number of ridges and hollows here that look like graves and at some there are rough head and foot  stones but no stones with any inscriptions on them.  No one knows who certainly is buried here.  It is supposed that John Thomas 5th and his wife, Elizabeth Cousinsand perhaps some of their family were buried here.  Col. Cornelius Thompson was buried here and perhaps his second and third wives.  His first wife, Judith, was buried at Hulls Cove in Mr. Allen Hamor's orchard.   The remains of Col. Cornelius Thompson and his wife Judith were taken up some years ago and buried in the Thompson Cemetery on Thompson Island.

There are graves on the point on the east side of North East Creek at its mouth where it is supposed that John Thomas 4th and Elizabeth Peck, his wife were buried.  These grounds are all grown up to trees and no care taken of them and soon no one will know anything about them.
