KITTREDGE STORE CHANGES HANDS

Famous And Fine Old Store For More Than A Half Century Sold To J. H. Butterfield;  Had Had Remarkable Record

Richmond H. Kittredge, the veteran merchant of this section, in business for more than a half century in Bar Harbor, has sold his grocery shop and the building in part of which it is located on Mount Desert Street, to John H. Butterfield.
The transaction is one of double interest, in that both men are prominent in the business circles of the town.  And while there is very real regret because of Mr. Kittredge's retirement from business, there is in as great a degree a very marked pleasure in the knlodge that the business is to be continued by a man so well known as is Mr. Butterfield.

The Kittredge store is one of the oldest not only in this town but in the state, and it is probable that it would be difficult to parallel the circumstance of long proprietorship.  Mr. Kittredge's father, the late Benjamin Kittredge, started the business in a small store on that same site.  The present building, one of the finest anywhere, with attractive rooms above, has been built something like a quarter of a century.
It is doubtful too, whether there are, anywhere, many who have been in the same business  at the same stand for a like period of years.  Mr. Kittredge has had as his customers some of the oldest families and the various generations.  He is known for square dealing, for able proprietorship of his business and keen understanding of buying and selling.

The deal involves many thousands of dollars and is one of the most important in a long time.  It was handled by Charles Pineo, esq.  Mr. Butterfield, it is understood, will continue a fancy grocery business there, and the Faneull Hall Market will be devoted to market lines.
